The books offered a strikingly original “high concept”. I'm reading the first one, Soldier of the Mist, right now. Wolfe evokes the beliefs and superstitions of the Overall though, this is good stuff and I look forward to finishing it and moving on to the sequel, Soldier of Arete. Check out Gene Wolfe's Soldier in the Mist and Soldier of Arete (collected together into a single volume called Latro in the Mist). Wolfe's books Soldier of the Mist and Soldier of Arete are amongst my favorites of his work, so I was pleased to see that he's written a third volume. Too many women, too many gods, too much talk. Soldier of Sidon , the long-awaited sequel to Soldier of the Mist and Soldier of Arete, (collected together as Latro in the Mist ) will be forthcoming in October. Hopefully the promised two sequels, when they appear, will clarify matters (but I'm not getting my hopes up…if anything Soldier of Arete muddies the waters of Soldier in the Mist). The two previous novels, combined in Latro in the Mist (Soldier of the Mist and Soldier of Arete) are generally considered classics of contemporary fantasy. It's about a Roman mercenary named Latro who fought for Due to his head wound, Latro can see the spiritual world that lies hidden from most mortals, so he has many encounters with gods and spirits. Latro is is one respect the opposite of Severian. In 1986, Wolfe published Soldier of the Mist, with its sequel, Soldier of Arete, appearing three years later. It sucks independently, in and of itself, and not only in comparison to "Soldier of the Mist" which was excellent and "Soldier of Arete" which was very good.
